Nobody had ever reached a hundred

When Hamilton crossed the line at Sochi he became the first driver in seventy-one years of the world championship to win a hundred Grands Prix.

Michael Schumacher's 91 had stood since 2006 and was widely assumed to be permanent. Hamilton passed it in 2020 and kept going.

The context that makes the number less simple: there were sixteen races a season in Schumacher's era and twenty-two in Hamilton's, and reliability improved enormously in between. The context that makes it more impressive: he took those wins across four different sets of technical regulations, with two different teams, over fifteen seasons.

How he got it

Not easily. Hamilton started fourth and spent most of the race behind Lando Norris, who was leading his first Grand Prix and driving superbly.

Rain arrived with six laps left. Mercedes called Hamilton in for intermediate tyres; McLaren left Norris out. Norris slid off at turn thirteen on the following lap, dropped to seventh, and Hamilton won by fifty-three seconds.

Norris was 21 and had led 51 laps of a Grand Prix he was about to win. He did not take his first victory for another three years.
