The white car was a goodbye to Honda that turned out not to be one

Red Bull painted both cars white for this one race. It was not a sponsor scheme — it was a tribute to Honda, which had announced in October 2020 that it would leave Formula One at the end of 2021.

The colour was chosen deliberately. Honda's first Formula One cars, the RA271 and RA272 of 1964 and 1965, were white with a red disc on the nose — the Japanese national racing colour, because at the time entrants raced in the colours of their country rather than their sponsors. Red Bull reproduced that scheme, badged the cars as Honda, and ran them at Istanbul, two races before Honda's home Grand Prix was due to be held.

The farewell was premature. Honda's engines won the 2021 championship with Verstappen; the company then agreed to keep supplying them under the Red Bull Powertrains name, extended that arrangement repeatedly, and formally returned as a works partner — with Aston Martin — from 2026.

So the tribute livery commemorates a departure that was reversed within a year.

Istanbul 2021

Verstappen finished second behind Valtteri Bottas, in a wet race nobody could pass in, and took the championship lead back from Lewis Hamilton, who had started eleventh after an engine penalty. Six points separated them with six races left.
