The race that ended a seven-year wait for somebody else

Hamilton won it from pole by more than twenty-five seconds, which was straightforward. The story of the afternoon was third place.

Fernando Alonso finished on the podium for the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix of 2014 — a gap of seven years and 105 races, spanning McLaren-Honda, two seasons away from the sport, and a comeback with Alpine at forty.

He had qualified fifth, made a start good enough to run third by the first corner, and then held the position for fifty-seven laps against faster cars. Alpine, which had not been near a podium all year, gambled on a one-stop strategy and it held.

Alonso was 40. He cried on the radio.

Losail

The circuit was built in 2004 for motorcycle racing and had never hosted a Formula One event. It was added to the 2021 calendar at short notice when the Australian Grand Prix was cancelled, and its long, fast corners turned out to punish tyres more severely than anyone had modelled — four drivers had front-left punctures in the closing laps.

Qatar has since signed a ten-year deal and the race is now a fixture.
