Free land, if you could survive five years on it

A farm in the American West in the 1860s and 1870s usually started with the Homestead Act of 1862, and its terms are worth knowing because they explain what these buildings look like.

Any adult citizen could claim 160 acres of public land for a small filing fee. The land became theirs outright if they built a dwelling on it, farmed it, and lived there for five continuous years.

That single condition shaped everything. A homesteader had to put up a house immediately, from whatever was to hand, because the clock started when he did β€” which is why frontier farm buildings are timber and sod rather than brick, and why they were extended piecemeal as money allowed rather than built to a plan.

Around 1.6 million claims were granted, covering a tenth of the United States. Something like half of all claimants failed before the five years were up: drought, isolation, debt, or simply being handed land that could not support a family.

The land, of course, was not empty. The Act gave away territory that belonged to people already living on it, and the two histories are the same history.

Sets 103410 (Saloon) and 103411 (Bank) are the other Wild West buildings, designed to stand alongside this one as a street.
