Bookshops can send stock back, and no other retailer can

The bookshop is unique in retail, and the reason is an arrangement invented during the Depression that nobody has managed to undo.

In almost every other trade, a shop buys stock and owns it. If it does not sell, that is the shop's problem — discount it, or eat the loss.

Books work on sale or return. A bookseller can send unsold copies back to the publisher for full credit, months later. Simon & Schuster introduced it in 1930 to persuade nervous shops to take stock at all, competitors had to match it, and it became permanent.

The effect runs through the whole industry. A bookshop can afford to stock a risky title, which is why small presses and unknown authors get shelf space at all. Publishers, in exchange, print far more than they expect to sell and carry the cost of returns — in some years a quarter or more of what ships comes back.

It is an inefficient system that nobody defends in principle and nobody will abolish, because the alternative is a shop that only stocks what it is certain of.

Eleven shops that make a street

City Corner sets are narrow shopfronts around 18 to 20 cm tall with flat side walls, designed to stand shoulder to shoulder. A run of four or five becomes a terrace, and reads as a place in a way one building never does.
