The Council rises, the road runs east, and nine walkers set out against a shadow that has been gathering for an age. Everything the game would become over the next six years starts here, at the moment the Ring leaves Rivendell.

Decipher launched The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game in November 2001, timed to the first film, and built it around a structure nobody else was using: one player guides the Fellowship along the adventure path while the other plays the Shadow, trying to kill or corrupt the Ring-bearer before he reaches Mordor. The Fellowship of the Ring is the premiere set — 365 cards, with a complete parallel foil set running alongside it.

Every box holds 36 booster packs of 11 cards each: 1 rare, 3 uncommon and 7 common. Roughly one pack in six carries a diffraction foil in place of a common.

The Fellowship of the Ring introduced the game to a generation that had just walked out of the cinema, and it stayed in print longer than any set that followed. Sealed boxes have been leaving circulation ever since — opened for the foils, broken down for singles, or simply lost to twenty-five years of moving house. This one is still shrink-wrapped.

Whether you are chasing foil Gandalfs, drafting with friends who remember the film's first run, or setting an unopened piece of the line on a shelf, this is where the LOTR TCG begins.
