Why a green locomotive is the interesting one
German steam locomotives are black in almost everyone's memory, and that is a consequence of an accounting decision rather than a design tradition.
Before 1920 Germany had no national railway. It had eight state railways β Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, WΓΌrttemberg, Baden, Mecklenburg, Oldenburg and the Palatinate β each with its own workshops, its own classes and its own colours. Prussian locomotives were commonly a dark green; Bavarian ones green too, in a different shade; Saxon engines varied.
When those railways were merged into the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the new organisation standardised everything it could, and paint was an obvious target. Black needs less preparation, hides soot and oil, costs less, and one colour across tens of thousands of locomotives simplifies every workshop in the country.
So the green disappeared over the 1920s as engines came in for overhaul, and a generation later everyone assumed locomotives had always been black.
This model is the earlier state. It is the same machine as the black version in set 102531, in the livery it wore before somebody in an office decided that colour was an expense.
A tank locomotive
No tender: the water sits in tanks alongside the boiler and the coal in a bunker behind the cab. That costs range and buys a shorter machine that runs equally well in both directions β which is what a shunting yard or a branch line without a turntable needs.
In the BlueBrixx range
Set 102531 is the same locomotive in black. Sets 101001, 102921, 102937 and 104004 are the other locomotives.
