The most successful rally car in the world is a Fabia

The small Škoda hatchback does not look like a competition car, and the rally version of it has won more than any other customer car of its generation.

Škoda has built rally Fabias since 2003, and the current Rally2 car — formerly called the R5 — dominates the category below the top World Rally Championship class. It has won the WRC2 manufacturers' title repeatedly, and on a typical national or European rally entry list the Fabia is not merely present but the most common car on the road.

The reason is not outright speed. Rally2 is a customer formula: a privateer team buys a car, and what decides whether they can compete all season is whether it keeps finishing and whether parts are available on a Tuesday. Škoda built its programme around exactly that — a car engineered to be repaired at the side of a stage and supported by a parts network that actually works.

It is the same instinct that produced the road car: build something that does not break, and let everyone else chase the headline figures.
