Numbered by what it could pull
The German half-track family was organised by towing capacity, and the designation tells you which one you are looking at. The Sd.Kfz 10 was the one-tonne class, the smallest of them; the 11 pulled three tonnes, the 7 pulled eight, and the 9 at the top of the range pulled eighteen and was used to recover tanks. A gun crew knew from the number alone whether a given vehicle could move their piece.
The half-track layout was a compromise: tracks at the back for grip on soft ground, steered wheels at the front so the driver did not need to learn track steering. It worked well enough that around 17,000 Sd.Kfz 10s were built between 1937 and 1945, towing light anti-tank and infantry guns and carrying their crews of six.
The chassis had a second career. Add an armoured body to it and you get the Sd.Kfz 250, the light armoured personnel carrier that served alongside the tank divisions for the rest of the war.
