The Log Lady filmed her last scenes four days before she died

Catherine Coulson played Margaret Lanterman from the 1990 pilot onward — the woman who carried a log and spoke for it, a character David Lynch had invented years earlier and never explained.

When the 2017 revival was made, Coulson had terminal cancer. She was too ill to travel to the set, so her scenes were shot at her home in Ashland, Oregon, in a single day. She filmed them on 24 September 2015 and died on 28 September, four days later.

Lynch and Mark Frost wrote her scenes as a series of telephone calls to Deputy Hawk, and they are among the most affecting things in the revival — partly because the character is saying goodbye, and partly because everyone watching knows the actress was too. Her final line is delivered to a man she is telling not to come and see her.

The set that this case belongs to is named for her. Its base cards carry Log Lady monologues, the introductions Lynch wrote for the syndicated reruns and recorded with Coulson in a single afternoon.
