What an inscription autograph actually is

The set's name is Archives and Inscriptions, and the second word is the product.

A standard autograph is a signature. An inscription autograph has something written alongside it — a character name, a line of dialogue, a catchphrase, sometimes a private joke between the actor and the fan base. "Make it so." "Resistance is futile." "Tea. Earl Grey. Hot."

That sounds like a small addition and it changes the card entirely. A signature is a name; an inscription is a performance. It also takes far longer — an actor signing a thousand cards can do so in a few sittings, but writing a phrase on each one is a different order of work, which is why inscriptions are always the scarcer version.

Collectors generally value them well above the plain signature, and a specific inscription — the right line, from the right character — can be worth several times an ordinary autograph of the same actor.

Rittenhouse built an entire set around the idea, which is why this box guarantees four autographs rather than the usual two or three.
