Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike aboard the Enterprise, in the years before James Kirk took command. Which means its central character has a fate that was written in 1966 and has never been undone.

In the original series two-parter The Menagerie, Pike appears years later, catastrophically injured in a training accident, confined to a chair and able to answer only yes or no. It was written as a way of reusing footage from the unaired pilot, and it accidentally gave a character the most fixed future in Star Trek.

Strange New Worlds made that its premise rather than working around it. Its Pike has seen his own future — he knows the year, the accident and the cadets he will save — and the series is about a man commanding a starship while carrying that.

It is a genuinely unusual thing to build a show on. The dramatic tension in most prequels comes from the audience knowing something the characters do not. Here the character knows, and the question is only what he does with the time.
