What a relic card actually is, honestly

A relic card contains a fragment of material used on the production — a piece of costume, a prop, occasionally a set dressing. It is embedded behind a window in the card and the manufacturer certifies its origin.

What it usually does not mean is that the specific actor pictured wore that specific piece in a scene you remember.

Productions buy multiples of every costume — for stunt doubles, for continuity, for the versions that get torn or bloodied. When a show ends, what reaches a card manufacturer is wardrobe from the production in general. A card saying it contains material from a garment worn by a character is accurate; a card implying it is the shirt from the pilot episode usually is not, and reputable manufacturers word their certifications carefully for exactly that reason.

None of that makes the cards less interesting. It means the thing to read is the wording on the back, and to treat vague claims with suspicion.

Lost is a good subject for it: the show ran six seasons on a real island with a large cast and an enormous wardrobe department, and the costumes were deliberately weathered, so the fragments look like something that has been somewhere.
