The cards exist because Rittenhouse plans a very long way ahead. When an actor of that stature agrees to sign, the company does not order what it needs for the current product — it orders as many as the actor will do, and puts the rest in a vault. Those signed cards then wait, sometimes for a decade, until a set comes along that deserves them.

It is the only way a hobby built on living signatures can keep producing cards of people who are gone. The same applies to René Auberjonois, who died in 2019 and appears here on a cut autograph relic card limited to fifty.

There is something slightly uncomfortable about it and something admirable too. The alternative is that the moment an actor dies, no new card of them can ever be made — and for a franchise now approaching sixty years old, that would rule out a great deal of what people actually want.

What every case is guaranteed to contain

Rittenhouse states that each 16-box case includes at least one autograph from Shatner, Stewart or Nimoy. That is an unusual promise to make, and it is the reason this set was presold before anyone had seen a card.

Also randomly inserted: the first-ever Five Captains card, signed by William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula — numbered to 33. Getting five signatures onto one piece of card is a logistical problem measured in years, and it has not been done before in this franchise.

Seventeen different autograph card styles appear in hobby boxes, including Classic TV — a design dating back to the SkyBox Star Trek cards of the late 1990s.
