The lap he is remembered for came earlier that year

Pérez's podium at Istanbul was solid work in a wet race. His 2021 is defined by something else entirely: twelve laps at Abu Dhabi, two months later, that the entire paddock watched with its mouth open.

At the final race, with the championship level on points, Red Bull needed Lewis Hamilton delayed. Pérez was a lap down and had no stake in the result. When Hamilton came past, Pérez did not move aside — he raced him, hard and legally, through three corners, twice regaining the position before finally being passed.

It cost Hamilton several seconds and brought Verstappen back into range. Verstappen's radio message afterwards — calling him a legend — became the clip of the season.

It is the purest illustration of what a second driver is for at the top of Formula One, and why teams pay for experience rather than raw speed in that seat.

The white livery

Red Bull painted both cars white for this single race as a tribute to Honda, which had announced it was leaving Formula One at the end of 2021. The scheme copies Honda's own cars of 1964 and 1965, which were white with a red disc — Japan's national racing colour.

Honda's engines then won the championship, and the withdrawal was progressively reversed. The company returns as a works partner in 2026.
