COBI Pennsylvania - Class Battleship (2in1) - Executive Edition Set 4842

COBI's Pennsylvania-class Battleship Executive Edition is a 1:300 model built from 2,088 blocks, 61.5 cm long, and it builds either the USS Pennsylvania or the USS Arizona — extra bricks with the markings and the features that differed between the two sisters are included. The propellers and rudders turn, the turrets rotate and the barrels elevate. A display stand takes black plates with the ship's name and technical data.

Two sisters, two new kinds of ending

Both ships were at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, and what happened to each of them marks the end of an era in a different way.

Arizona took a bomb that reached a forward magazine. The explosion destroyed the ship in seconds and killed 1,177 men. She was never raised, and she is still there.

Pennsylvania was in dry dock, was lightly damaged, and went on to serve through the entire Pacific war — shore bombardment, the Aleutians, the Philippines, a torpedo hit at Okinawa. By 1946 she was obsolete, and the United States used her for something no ship had been used for before: she was anchored at Bikini Atoll as a target for two nuclear weapons tests, survived both, and was towed away, studied, and scuttled.

One sister was destroyed by air power at the moment it made battleships obsolete. The other was expended demonstrating the weapon that made the argument irrelevant.
