A room with a door, and why it is disappearing
The compartment carriage β six or eight seats in a small room, a sliding door, and a corridor running down one side β is a European invention that is quietly vanishing.
It came from the stagecoach. The earliest railway carriages were literally coach bodies mounted on a railway underframe, and the compartment is what a coach interior looks like. For most of a century it stayed the standard: a group travelling together got a room to themselves, strangers negotiated a small social contract about the window and the light, and the corridor let a conductor reach everyone.
Modern trains use open saloons instead, and the reasons are unromantic. A saloon seats more people in the same length. It needs one door per carriage end rather than a corridor eating a metre of width. Staff and passengers can see the whole space, which matters for security. And it is far easier to clean.
What is lost is the thing people remember: a door you can close, and a journey that feels like being somewhere rather than sitting in a row.
In the BlueBrixx range
Set 104283 is the BR 103 locomotive in matching Rheingold livery, 104287 the dining car and 104286 the observation car with its glass dome. The four are designed to run as a train.
