COBI P-51D Mustang Top Gun Set 5846
COBI's P-51D Mustang is a 1:32 model built from 350 blocks, 31 cm long with a 35 cm wingspan, produced under the original Top Gun: Maverick licence in the film aircraft's paint. The propeller turns, the landing gear locks, the wheels move and the canopy opens for a figure inspired by the film's lead. A display stand and a plaque with the aircraft name and film logo are included.
The Mustang in the film belongs to Tom Cruise
The P-51 that Maverick keeps in his hangar is not a prop or a rental. Tom Cruise owns a P-51D Mustang, has held a pilot's licence since the 1990s, and flies it himself.
The aircraft appears in the film because he suggested it, and the flying in those scenes is his. That is also why the paint scheme on this model is a specific aeroplane with a registration rather than a generic wartime livery.
It is an unusual case of a film prop being the actor's personal property, and it explains why the Mustang gets the screen time it does in a film otherwise about jets.
Why Mustangs are still flying
Around 15,000 were built, the design stayed in military service somewhere in the world until 1984, and a large number ended up in private hands as surplus β cheap, fast, and simple enough for a civilian owner to maintain.
They became the aircraft of choice for air racing at Reno and a fixture at air shows, which is why more airworthy Mustangs survive today than almost any other Second World War fighter.
