COBI's P-51D Mustang Top Gun is a 1:48 model built from 150 blocks, 20 cm long with a 23 cm wingspan, under the original Top Gun: Maverick licence in the film aircraft's markings. All details are printed.

Which Mustang is which

COBI makes three P-51Ds and they are easy to confuse, so it is worth being clear about this one.

This is the small Top Gun Mustang: 1:48, 150 pieces, film markings, no figure and no display stand. It is the compact version, and it stands correctly beside COBI's large bombers at the same scale.

Set 5846 is the large Top Gun Mustang — 1:32, 350 pieces, with a figure inspired by the film's lead, a display stand and a plaque. If you want the centrepiece, that is the one.

Set 5860 is the same size as this model but in wartime markings rather than the film livery.

The aircraft in the film is real

The Mustang Maverick keeps in his hangar is not a prop. Tom Cruise owns a P-51D, has held a pilot's licence since the 1990s, and flies it himself — which is why the film's paint scheme is a specific aeroplane with a registration rather than a generic wartime finish.

Around 15,000 Mustangs were built, the type stayed in military service somewhere in the world into the 1980s, and a large number passed into private hands as surplus. That is why more airworthy Mustangs survive today than almost any other fighter of the period.
