COBI Opel Rekord C Coupe - Executive Edition Set 24344

COBI's Opel Rekord C Coupé Executive Edition is a 1:12 model built from 2,415 blocks, 37.5 cm long, under original Opel licence, with a black roof unique to this edition. The steering wheel turns the wheels, the doors open on hinges, the bonnet tilts to a brick-built engine, and handles, lights and instruments are reproduced in print. A black display stand and a laser-engraved plate are included. No stickers.

A German car drawn in Detroit

Look at the profile: the waistline dips behind the door and rises again over the rear wheel. That shape has a name — Coke bottle styling — and it is American.

General Motors owned Opel, and GM's design studios in Detroit set the house style for the whole corporation. The Rekord C of 1966 was drawn under that influence, with the same pinched-waist, hipped-rear-wing look GM was putting on Chevrolets and Pontiacs at the time.

The result is a car that looks subtly wrong to anyone expecting a German saloon of the 1960s — too curved, too theatrical, too obviously styled rather than engineered. It was also the best-selling Rekord ever, with over 1.2 million built in five years, because a lot of European buyers wanted exactly that.

The coupé is the version that carries the shape best, and it is the reason the Rekord C is the one collectors want.
