COBI Opel Rekord C Coupe Set 24345

COBI's Opel Rekord C Coupé is a 1:12 model built from 2,195 blocks, 37.5 cm long, under original Opel licence. The steering wheel turns the wheels, the doors open on hinges, the bonnet lifts to a brick-built engine, and handles, lights and instruments are reproduced in print. No stickers.

The engine under that bonnet ran for thirty years

The Rekord C of 1966 introduced Opel's CIH engine — camshaft in head, a layout sitting between a pushrod design and a full overhead-camshaft one, with the camshaft in the cylinder head but operating the valves through short rockers.

It was a compromise, and it was a good one. Simpler and cheaper to build than a proper overhead-cam engine, quieter and freer-breathing than pushrods, and — crucially — easy to enlarge. The same basic engine was produced in capacities from 1.7 to 3.0 litres.

It stayed in production until 1995. Twenty-nine years, in the Rekord, the Commodore, the Manta, the Ascona, the Kadett GT/E, the Monza, the Senator and the Frontera. Very few engine families have that kind of run, and it is the reason Opel could offer performance versions of ordinary cars cheaply for three decades — the block was already paid for.

The Rekord C

Over 1.2 million built in five years, Opel's best-selling Rekord ever, with body styling drawn under the influence of General Motors' American studios. The coupé is the version that carries the shape best.

Set 24344 is the Executive Edition of the same coupé, with a black roof, a display stand and an engraved plate. Sets 24597, 24598 and 24599 are the 1:35 Rekord C models.
