COBI Opel Rekord C 1900 L Set 24598
COBI's Opel Rekord C 1900 L is a 1:35 model built from 134 blocks under original licence from Opel, 13.2 cm long, with rotating wheels on rubber tires and a plate carrying the vehicle name and the Opel logo.
Reading the badge
The name on the back of the car tells you everything the buyer chose. Rekord was the model, C the generation — Opel lettered them A, B, C, D and so on rather than giving them new names. 1900 was the engine in cubic centimetres. L stood for Luxus, the better of the two trim levels.
German manufacturers of the period all worked this way, and customers read the badges fluently. A Rekord C 1700 and a Rekord C 1900 L looked almost identical from ten metres, and everyone on the road knew which was which and roughly what the owner had paid.
The Rekord C, launched in 1966, was the car that made Opel's numbers work: it passed a million units, the first time an Opel in the mid-size class had done so, and it was built as a two-door, a four-door, a coupé and a Caravan estate.
