A temple on the river

The Confucius Temple in Nanjing, known as the Fuzimiao, stands on the Qinhuai River. It was founded under the Song dynasty and rebuilt many times, and for centuries the district around it was the center of learning in the city, with the examination halls where candidates sat the imperial civil-service exams nearby. Today the area is one of Nanjing's busiest old quarters.
