F5 is a tornado rating

Hennessey names its cars after things that move air violently, and the F5 in this one is the top of the Fujita scale — the classification used to rate tornado damage, where an F5 means winds above about 420 km/h and total destruction of well-built houses.

It is not a boast about the car's top speed so much as a statement of intent: the company's stated target for the Venom F5 was to exceed 300 miles per hour, a number no production car had reached.

That target is genuinely difficult, and not because of power. At 300 mph aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed while the power needed rises with the cube, so each additional mile per hour costs far more than the last. The tyres become the limiting factor — rubber at those rotational speeds is close to tearing itself apart — and there are only a handful of stretches of road on earth long enough to try it.

The predecessor, the Venom GT, recorded 270 mph in 2014 on a NASA runway in Florida, but only in one direction — records require a two-way average — so it was never recognised officially.

Which is the recurring story of top-speed runs: the engineering is hard, and the paperwork is harder.
