A GT car has to be a car you could have bought

That is the entire definition of the class, and it is what separates a GT racer from a prototype.

Le Mans runs two kinds of car at once. Prototypes are built from nothing to a rulebook — they exist only to race, and no version of them is sold to anybody. GT cars must be derived from a road car that a manufacturer actually produces and sells, in a minimum quantity, to ordinary customers.

So a GT racer starts as a showroom model and is then stripped, caged, lowered, re-aeroed and re-engineered until very little is shared but the shape and the basic architecture. The front splitter, the flared arches, the diffuser and the wing on this model are all additions to something that began as a grand tourer with leather seats.

It is why GT racing has the audience it does. A prototype is a machine nobody will ever own. A GT car is recognisably the thing in the showroom, going as fast as it is physically able to.

The 575 GTC belongs to the early 2000s, when front-engined V12 grand tourers were competing against mid-engined opposition — a layout most engineers had already given up on, kept alive because the road car it came from was built that way.
