Why 1:43 became the collector's scale

Almost every Formula One model on this page is 1:43, and that is not an accident of taste.

The scale comes from British model railways. O gauge was standardised in the early twentieth century at a track gauge of 32 millimetres, which works out at roughly 1:43.5 for standard-gauge prototypes — and manufacturers making road vehicles to go alongside the trains adopted the same proportion. Dinky Toys used it from the 1930s, Corgi followed, and by the 1960s it was simply what a model car was.

It survived because the size is right. A 1:43 Formula One car is about ten centimetres long: large enough for printed sponsor decals, mirrors, suspension arms and a driver's helmet to be reproduced legibly, and small enough that a collection of thirty fits on one shelf.

The alternatives make the trade-off visible. 1:18 models are twice as detailed and take four times the space; 1:64 fits anywhere and cannot carry the detail. A collector assembling a full grid — twenty cars from one season — has room for it at 1:43 and nowhere else.

Minichamps has built its Formula One catalogue on that scale since the 1990s, which is why the range is consistent enough to collect systematically.
