The last time Red Bull looked invincible

A one-two at the season opener, in a radically new car, for a team that had won 21 of 22 races the year before. On the evening of 2 March 2024 the 2024 championship looked like a formality.

What followed was one of the stranger seasons in the sport's recent history.

Adrian Newey announced in May that he was leaving after nineteen years. Sporting director Jonathan Wheatley and head of strategy Will Courtenay followed him out. The RB20's development stalled around mid-season; Verstappen won two of the final fourteen races and still took the title, while McLaren overhauled Red Bull to win the constructors' championship.

Pérez signed a contract extension in June and was released from it before the following season began.

This model is from the weekend before any of that — the last race at which the answer to "who wins the championship" seemed obvious to everyone.
