They threw away the most dominant car ever built and started again
The RB19 won 21 of 22 races in 2023. The conventional response to that is to refine it: keep the concept, find another half-second, defend the advantage.
Adrian Newey did the opposite. The RB20 that appeared in Bahrain had an entirely different sidepod and cooling architecture β narrow inlets high on the chassis, a bodywork shape nobody else was running, and a floor developed from scratch. Rival engineers walking the grid at the first test were photographing it from every angle.
The reasoning was that the 2022 regulations were mature enough that the obvious development directions were exhausted, and that the only remaining gains were in concepts nobody had tried. Refining a winning car buys you a year; changing it buys you the next three.
It worked immediately β a one-two in Bahrain, and Verstappen winning seven of the first ten races.
It is also the last car Newey designed for Red Bull. He announced his departure in May 2024 after nineteen years and thirteen world championships with the team.
