The most successful Mexican driver in the sport's history

Pérez finished the 2023 season second in the world championship, which is the best result any Mexican has achieved. He has six Grand Prix victories; the previous national record, held by Pedro Rodríguez since 1970, was two.

It is also, in the peculiar economy of Formula One, the season in which his position was least secure.

Being Verstappen's team-mate is the hardest job on the grid. Pierre Gasly lasted twelve races there. Alexander Albon lasted eighteen months and was dropped. Pérez spent four seasons in the seat, won races, and was still the subject of replacement speculation in every one of them — including the year he finished runner-up.

The reason is arithmetic rather than politics. When one driver wins nineteen races, anything his team-mate does looks like underachievement, regardless of what a neutral observer would make of six career wins and a championship runner-up finish.
