He called it ninety-nine per cent show before winning it
Verstappen spent the build-up to Las Vegas making his opinion clear. Asked about the opening ceremony, the drivers being raised on platforms and the general production, he said the weekend was ninety-nine per cent show and one per cent sporting event, and that he would rather be somewhere else.
The first practice session lasted eight minutes. Carlos Sainz's Ferrari ran over a loose concrete drain cover on the Strip at around 300 km/h, which destroyed the floor, the chassis and the engine. The session was stopped while the organisers welded every drain on the circuit.
Second practice eventually began at half past two in the morning, by which point the paying spectators had been sent home for safety reasons without seeing a car. They were offered a 200-dollar voucher for the merchandise shop; a class action followed.
Sainz then received a ten-place grid penalty, because replacing the battery destroyed by the drain cover broke the rules on component changes, and the stewards said they had no discretion.
The race itself, when it finally happened, was one of the best of the season β Verstappen and Leclerc swapping the lead, a late pass for the win, and genuine racing on a circuit nobody had rated.
The livery
Red Bull ran a one-off colour scheme for the weekend, developed as a Las Vegas tribute. It appeared at one Grand Prix and nowhere else, which is why models of it exist as separate products rather than variations.
