Red Bull won the constructors' championship with six races still to run

Suzuka is where the 2023 constructors' title was settled. Red Bull had 623 points; Mercedes, in second, had 305. With six Grands Prix and two sprint races left, the arithmetic was finished.

It was the team's sixth constructors' title, and it came one week after the only defeat of the season. Ferrari had won at Singapore, ending a streak that had run to fifteen races across two years — and the widespread theory was that Red Bull had finally been caught.

Verstappen then took pole at Suzuka by nearly six tenths, led every lap, and won by nineteen seconds. Both McLarens finished on the podium behind him. Sergio Pérez had two collisions, served two penalties, retired, was called back out purely so the team could serve a third penalty, and then retired again.

The Singapore theory did not survive the week.

Suzuka

The circuit is the only figure-of-eight in Formula One, with the back straight crossing over the first sector on a bridge. It is also owned by Honda — which was supplying Red Bull's engines, and which had its home Grand Prix turned into a title celebration.
