Ninth in a row, at home, in the rain

Zandvoort is Verstappen's home circuit — a track that had been off the Formula One calendar for 35 years until 2021, brought back largely because a Dutch driver had become world champion material and a hundred thousand people in orange would follow him to the coast.

This was his third win there in three attempts, and the ninth consecutive victory of the season — equalling the record Sebastian Vettel had set for Red Bull in 2013. He broke it two weeks later at Monza.

The race itself was the opposite of the season around it. Rain arrived on the opening lap and again near the end, the race was red-flagged, and drivers were pitting for wet tyres, then slicks, then wets again. Ten cars failed to finish. Fernando Alonso took second for Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly third for Alpine — a podium that belonged to a different sort of season entirely.

Verstappen made the right call every time and won by three and a half seconds.
