He started sixth

Verstappen qualified fastest at Spa and then took a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox, which dropped him to sixth for the race.

It made no difference. He was third by the end of the first lap, second by lap twelve, and in the lead by lap seventeen. He won by twenty-two seconds from his own team-mate.

Spa-Francorchamps is seven kilometres long with three of the longest full-throttle sections in Formula One, which suited the RB19 better than any circuit on the calendar. It was also the last race before the summer break, with the championship already effectively decided.

The most revealing statistic of that afternoon is not the winning margin but the fact that a five-place penalty at a track with limited overtaking cost him eleven laps.

Where it sits in the season

This was the eighth consecutive win of a run that reached ten — a record — and the last of the first half of the year. Red Bull went into August having won every race of the season so far.
