Two cars were disqualified hours after the finish — and only four were checked

After the race, the FIA measured the underfloor plank on a sample of cars. The plank is a strip of wood beneath the floor that wears away if a car runs too low; the rule allows a millimetre of wear, and it exists to stop teams running dangerously stiff, low setups.

Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes and Charles Leclerc's Ferrari were both outside the limit. Both were disqualified. Hamilton lost a second place; Leclerc lost sixth.

What made it notable is that the FIA checked four cars out of twenty, chosen partly at random, and half of them failed. Nobody knows how many of the other sixteen would have passed.

The explanation offered was the sprint format — Austin was a sprint weekend, with a single practice session before parc fermé rules locked the cars, leaving teams to guess at setup. Combined with Austin's notoriously bumpy surface, cars were bottoming out harder than predicted.

The FIA increased the number of cars checked after this. The result stood.

The race

Verstappen won from sixth on the grid, having lost his fastest qualifying lap to track limits. Lando Norris led until lap 28.
