He became the first driver banned under the penalty points system
Formula One introduced a licence points system in 2014: twelve points in a twelve-month period brings a one-race suspension. For a decade nobody reached it.
Magnussen reached it in 2024. He collected penalties through the first half of the season for a series of incidents β several of them deliberate tactical choices, blocking rivals to hold up the field while his team-mate built a gap, a tactic he was fairly open about. At Monza he took two more points and hit twelve.
He missed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Oliver Bearman drove the car instead.
It is a strange distinction, because the driving that produced it was not reckless so much as calculating. Magnussen spent 2024 being exactly the kind of racer teams want and stewards do not, and became the test case for a rule everyone had forgotten existed.
His last season
Haas did not retain him for 2025, ending a Formula One career of 186 starts across two spells, one podium β second at Melbourne on his debut in 2014 β and no wins. He moved to sports car racing with BMW.
The VF-24 was Haas's best car in years, scoring 58 points and seventh in the constructors' championship.
