Eight podiums to none in one year

The AMR23 had put Aston Martin on the podium eight times and third in the constructors' championship. The AMR24 managed nothing — no podium, no front-row start, and fifth place overall behind a McLaren team that had started 2023 at the back.

The reason is the least dramatic one in engineering: development rate. Under a budget cap, every team has roughly the same money, so the race is about how efficiently that money turns into lap time — wind tunnel hours, simulation quality, how quickly a design reaches the track.

Aston Martin had built a new factory and a new wind tunnel, neither of which was fully operational in 2024. It was, in effect, running a championship campaign while moving house. Meanwhile McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes all out-developed it.

The team's answer was to buy the best aerodynamicist in the sport. Adrian Newey joined in 2025, along with Honda works engines from 2026, and the AMR24 is now remembered as the low point before that investment.

He scored 24 points to Alonso's 70, and finished six of the twenty-four races in the points.
