He is the last man on the grid who raced against Michael Schumacher

Alonso made his Formula One debut in 2001, with Minardi. The world champion that year was Schumacher; the grid included Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve and Eddie Irvine.

By 2024 every one of them had been retired for well over a decade, and Alonso was still there — in his 21st season, at 42, having signed a contract extension that takes him past his 45th birthday.

The span is hard to picture properly. When he started, cars had V10 engines, refuelling, traction control and no hybrid system. He has raced under five different sets of technical regulations. Lando Norris was one year old at his debut; Oscar Piastri had not started school.

He has also, in that time, won 32 Grands Prix and two world championships, won Le Mans twice, won the Daytona 24 Hours, and attempted the Indianapolis 500 three times in pursuit of the triple crown.

The obvious question — why he has not won a third title — has a plain answer: the years he was quickest, the fastest cars belonged to other people.

The AMR24

Aston Martin had finished 2023 with eight podiums and expectations. The AMR24 took none, and the team spent the season being overtaken by rivals who had developed faster. Alonso scored 70 points.
