A 1:43 model of the Williams FW45 as raced by Logan Sargeant at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix โ€” his first race in Formula One. Limited to 408 pieces. Resin, in a protective display case.

The first American on a Formula One grid in sixteen years

Logan Sargeant, from Fort Lauderdale, was the first American to start a Formula One season since Scott Speed in 2007, and the first American to start any Grand Prix since Alexander Rossi's five races in 2015.

That gap is remarkable for a country that hosts three Grands Prix and where the sport's audience has roughly tripled since 2018. The reason is structural: the American racing ladder runs through IndyCar and NASCAR, both of which pay drivers, while the European route to Formula One runs through junior formulae that cost millions and pay nothing. A talented American teenager has an easier and better-funded path at home.

Sargeant took the European route instead โ€” karting in Italy from the age of thirteen, then Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2 โ€” and qualified for a superlicence by finishing fourth in F2 in 2022.

He lasted one season, scored a single point in Austin, and was replaced. Whatever one makes of that, this car is from the race that ended the drought.

Why a debut model is a specific object

Minichamps produces a great many cars per season, and most differ only in small livery details. A driver's first Grand Prix happens once.
