That single statistic is the 2023 season for Williams, and it is the reason Albon's reputation was rebuilt.

He had been dropped by Red Bull at the end of 2020 after eighteen months alongside Max Verstappen — a seat that has ended more careers than it has made. Albon spent 2021 out of Formula One entirely, racing in the DTM and working as a reserve.

Williams took him for 2022, at the point when Williams was the slowest team on the grid. In 2023 he dragged that car into the points repeatedly, including seventh at Silverstone and Montreal, while his team-mate managed one point all season.

A driver outscoring his team-mate 27 to 1 usually means the team-mate is struggling. It also means the car was capable of very little, and one driver was finding all of it.

That performance is what put him back on the list of drivers top teams call, and Williams signed him through to 2027 rather than risk losing him.
