The result was not final until hours after the finish

The Red Bull Ring has wide kerbs and gravel just beyond them, and in 2023 the rule was that a car running wide with all four wheels lost the lap time. Enforcement is done by camera and by hand.

By the end of the Austrian Grand Prix the stewards had received more than 1,200 reports of drivers exceeding track limits. They could not process them during the race. They were still working through the backlog long after the podium ceremony had finished and the cars were in their garages.

Hours later, penalties were applied to five drivers. Carlos Sainz dropped from sixth to seventh. Sergio Pérez, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and others were reordered behind them. Aston Martin had lodged a protest that triggered the review; it was upheld, and the classification everyone had gone home believing was replaced.

Formula One changed how track limits are policed the following year, partly because of this afternoon. Gravel strips were laid at the Red Bull Ring so that running wide costs time by itself.

Verstappen's win was never in doubt. Everything behind him was.

The weekend

He took pole, won the sprint and won the Grand Prix, and set the fastest lap on the final tour — a full sweep at Red Bull's home circuit, in front of an orange grandstand that had come from the Netherlands.
