This is the version of the car nobody wants to remember

McLaren started 2023 with what was widely agreed to be the slowest car on the grid apart from one. Norris finished seventeenth in Bahrain. The team had publicly admitted before the season began that it had missed its own development targets — an unusual thing to say out loud in February.

Then, at the Austrian Grand Prix in July, McLaren brought an upgrade package that changed the car completely. New floor, new sidepods, new front wing. Norris finished fourth in the sprint and second at Silverstone a week later.

From that race to the end of the season McLaren scored more points than anyone except Red Bull. The MCL60 went from last-but-one to the second-quickest car on the grid in half a season, which is close to unheard of under a cost cap that limits how much development anyone can buy.

So there are effectively two MCL60s: the one raced before Austria and the one raced after. They are visibly different cars.

Why the early version is worth having

Most models in this range are of a car at its best. This one is a car at its worst — and it is the only version that shows what McLaren actually brought to the first race of the year.
