Seventy-seven per cent of a team's championship total from one of its two cars is close to unheard of, and it is the number that defined Norris's 2022.

The MCL36 was not a good car. It finished fifth in the constructors' championship, took no podiums, and spent much of the season being beaten by an Alpine. What it had was one driver reliably extracting more from it than it contained.

Fourth at Singapore is a fair example. The race ran in heavy rain behind the safety car for the opening laps, lasted almost exactly the two-hour maximum, and produced retirements from cars far quicker than his.

That season is why McLaren restructured around him, and why Daniel Ricciardo's contract was terminated a year early.

The MCL36's start

The car had a genuinely disastrous beginning. Its brake package failed during pre-season testing in Bahrain, overheating so badly that neither driver could complete a meaningful run — they lost most of their preparation. McLaren arrived at the first race effectively untested and finished the weekend last of the teams that finished.

It was fixed within a few races, but a Formula One season is short and the deficit was never fully recovered.
