The only driver on the grid whose father owns the team

Lawrence Stroll made his money in fashion — he built Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors into international businesses — and in 2018 he led a consortium that bought Force India out of administration, saving about four hundred jobs. The team became Racing Point, then Aston Martin when he took a substantial stake in the car company too.

His son had already been racing there. Lance Stroll came into Formula One with Williams in 2017 at eighteen, with his father's backing behind a karting and junior career that was among the most expensively supported in the sport's history.

That arrangement attracts a particular kind of commentary, and most of it misses two things.

The first is that Stroll took a podium in Baku in his rookie season and another in Italy, at nineteen, in a Williams. The second is that pay drivers have funded Formula One teams since the 1970s — the difference here is that the money is not rented, it is the ownership.

What that buys is a seat nobody can take away, which is a genuinely unusual position and has produced a career of quietly competent results and very little pressure.

Stroll scored 74 points to Fernando Alonso's 206 in the same car — the season Aston Martin arrived at the front. He also started the year having broken both wrists in a cycling accident two weeks before the first race, and raced in Bahrain anyway, finishing sixth.
