The D is the packaging — and here it also changes the instructions

This set and set 3105 contain the same six models and the same 908 pieces. Two things differ.

This version arrives as one large box with a handle, designed to be given as a present. Set 3105 is a strip of six small sealed boxes — six small presents instead of one.

And this version comes with printed instructions, where set 3105 supplies them as a PDF. For a six-year-old building at a table, a booklet is easier to live with than a tablet among the bricks. That is most of the reason for the price difference.

Two transformations, not one

In most combining sets the small models are vehicles, and the only transformation is the one that joins them. Here each of the six is already a robot that becomes a vehicle — and then the six combine into a seventh, larger one.

Every part therefore does three jobs: part of a vehicle, part of a small robot, part of a limb of the big robot, with joints that hold in all three positions and nothing obviously left over in any of them.

That is why the piece count is 908 while the individual models stay small. The extra parts are not detail — they are the hinges, pins and connectors that let one shape be three shapes.
