The race that decided the most contested championship in years

On the opening lap at Silverstone, Hamilton put his front wheel alongside Max Verstappen's rear at Copse — a corner taken at around 290 km/h — and their wheels touched. Verstappen went into the barriers at 51G and was taken to hospital for checks.

Hamilton received a ten-second penalty, served it, and then caught and passed Charles Leclerc with two laps remaining to win in front of 140,000 people.

Red Bull's reaction was immediate and public: Christian Horner called the move amateur and dangerous, the team asked for the penalty to be reviewed, and the review was rejected. Mercedes maintained that Hamilton was alongside and entitled to the corner.

Nobody changed their mind about it, then or since. It is the single most argued-about incident of a season that ended with the two of them separated by a handful of points at the final race in Abu Dhabi — which produced an argument of its own.

The sprint format

Silverstone 2021 also hosted the first sprint race in Formula One history. Verstappen won it, which set the grid; Hamilton started second and finished first in the Grand Prix.
