COBI's Maserati Levante Trofeo is built from 110 blocks under original Maserati licence, with wheels that turn on rubber tires. All markings are printed.

Ferrari built the engine

Trofeo is the top version of the Levante, and what makes it that is a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 producing around 580 hp — assembled by Ferrari in Maranello.

That is not marketing licence. Maserati and Ferrari spent years as sister companies under the same corporate roof, and Ferrari built Maserati's V8 and V6 engines for the best part of two decades. The engines were Maserati-specified rather than Ferrari units in disguise, but they were made on Ferrari's line by Ferrari's people.

It ended when the group was reorganised and Maserati brought engine production back in-house with the Nettuno V6 in 2020. For a period, though, buying a fast Maserati meant buying something with a Maranello-built engine in it — and the Levante Trofeo is one of the last.

An SUV was an uncomfortable thing for Maserati to build at all. It arrived in 2016, sold in numbers the sports cars never approached, and paid for a great deal of what followed.

In the COBI range

Set 24560 is the standard Levante, 24567 the GranTurismo GT3 racing car and 24568 the Maserati garage set.
