The cruiser is a ship class that quietly disappeared

For a century the cruiser was the workhorse of every major navy: bigger than a destroyer, smaller than a battleship, fast enough to scout and strong enough to fight alone on the far side of an ocean. Every fleet had dozens.

Today almost nobody builds them. The United States operates the last sizeable class and is retiring it; Russia has a handful of ageing ships; most navies have none at all and no plans for any.

What killed the cruiser was the missile. The class existed because of the relationship between gun size, armour and hull size — a bigger ship carried bigger guns that outranged smaller ships, so there was a meaningful ladder from destroyer up to battleship.

A missile does not care. The same anti-ship missile fits on a corvette, a destroyer or an aircraft, and it will sink any of them. Once range and firepower stopped depending on displacement, the reason to build a ship halfway up the ladder disappeared. Navies now build destroyers — which have grown to the size cruisers used to be — and call them destroyers.

It is a rare case of a whole category of thing vanishing not because it failed, but because the logic that produced it stopped applying.
