The one tank battle anyone filmed
On 6 March 1945, in the ruins of Cologne, a Panther was sitting near the cathedral covering a crossroads. It had just destroyed an American Sherman, killing three of the crew.
A T26E3 Pershing was brought up. It approached the junction from a side street, and a US Army Signal Corps cameraman, Jim Bates, positioned himself on an upper floor with a view of both tanks.
What he recorded is almost unique: an actual tank-versus-tank engagement, from beginning to end, in focus. The Pershing edged out, fired three rounds in a few seconds, and the Panther burned. The footage has been shown in documentaries ever since, and the men in it have been identified by name.
Too late to matter
The Pershing was the American answer to the Tiger and the Panther: 90 mm gun, 102 mm of frontal armour, a match for anything Germany had.
It arrived in February 1945. Around twenty saw combat in Europe before the war ended, and the tank that might have changed the armoured balance of 1944 instead fought for a few weeks against an enemy already collapsing. About 2,200 were built.
Its real war came later, in Korea from 1950, where it was one of the few American tanks that could reliably destroy a T-34-85.
