A luxury shop shows you less on purpose

Look at the window of a high-end boutique and then at a normal clothes shop. One has three handbags on plinths with space around them. The other has forty items on a rail.

That is a deliberate inversion of ordinary retail logic, where more on display means more chances to sell. Luxury retail runs the other way, and the reasoning is consistent.

Scarcity of display signals scarcity of goods, and scarcity is most of what is being sold. Space around an object makes it look considered rather than stocked. And an empty-looking shop is intimidating in a way that is entirely intentional — it filters out people who were not going to buy, and flatters those who walk in anyway.

Prices in the window follow the same thinking. Many luxury shops do not show them, and the old line about it being vulgar to ask is really a filter: if the price matters to you, you are not the customer.

Everything about the frontage is a sorting mechanism dressed up as taste.

Eleven shops that make a street

City Corner sets are narrow shopfronts around 18 to 20 cm tall with flat side walls, designed to stand shoulder to shoulder. A run of four or five becomes a terrace, and reads as a place in a way one building never does.
