A coach is not a bus with nicer seats
The difference is under the floor, and it changes the whole vehicle.
A city bus has a low floor so people can step on and off quickly at frequent stops. Everything mechanical is squeezed around that β there is no room underneath for anything else, and passengers carry what they are holding.
A coach raises the floor to roughly waist height and puts a continuous luggage bay along the whole length beneath it. That is the entire design decision, and everything else follows from it: the high windows and the view they give, the single door, the steps at the entrance, the toilet at the rear, and the fact that boarding takes minutes rather than seconds.
It is why a coach is useless on a city route and a bus is useless between cities. They are shaped by whether the passenger is carrying a suitcase.
Long-distance coach travel in Germany was effectively banned for decades to protect the railways, and only became legal again in 2013 β after which the market exploded, consolidated, and settled into a handful of operators in about five years.
